I created a lighthearted survey about pet ownership. I asked people what kind of pet they have and if they enjoy being pet owners and animals in general. Results indicated an average ownership of cats and dogs in particular, with the remaining responses being aquarium pets like fish and snails.
Before creating this survey, I had only worked with Google Forms once before, so I still had a little bit of learning to do. It took some small trial and error to create my questions, but overall, I found it easy.
While working on this, I realized that there is more to creating surveys than we think. I would create a question with a couple of response options, and then later learn that the responses can vary so much more, so I had to try to include an ‘other’ option. If there were any ‘essay’ questions, I wanted to keep them simple. No one enjoys a survey where they have to type out entire paragraphs to respond.
There’s no question in my mind that surveys are helpful when it comes to instructional design work. They’re a great way to gather information on the current situation and can help determine the best route to create successful instructional design modules.
